UCEE Chairholder


The Chairholder of UCEE is appointed from among full professors of the School of Engineering at the University of Tehran by the university president for a four-year term

 

Responsibilities

1i. Propose projects, programs, and research activities to achieve the objectives of the Chair
2i. Manage the Chair in accordance with the regulations and guidelines approved by the Steering Committee
3i. Recommend members of the Steering Committee to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering for formal appointment
4i. Follow up on the resolutions of the Steering Committee and the recommendations of the Advisory Board
5i. Convene and manage meetings of the Steering Committee of the Chair
6i. Establish and evaluate the performance of the Chair’s specialized working groups
7i. Maintain communication and hold meetings with the Advisory Board of the Chair
8i. Prepare and submit the annual performance report of the Chair to the University of Tehran and UNESCO
9i. Propose the organizational structure of the Chair to the Dean of the School of Engineering for review, approval, and implementation

Establishment History

In 2009, the initial proposal to establish the UNESCO Chair on Engineering Education was shared at the Faculty of Engineering. Following consultative meetings at the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, the proposal letter, along with justifications and required documents, was sent to UNESCO in Paris on May 4, 2010. On December 7, 2011, the proposal was approved by UNESCO. Subsequently, on April 8, 2012, the President of the University of Tehran appointed Professor Hossein Memarian—who had originally initiated and pursued the proposal—as the Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Engineering Education. This appointment has since been renewed every four years.

Biography

Professor Hossein Memarian holds a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Tehran, an M.Sc. in Engineering Geology from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and a Ph.D. in Rock Fracture Mechanics from the University of Wollongong, Australia. He has several years of professional experience working in the coal mines of Kerman and the oil fields of southern Iran. He is currently a Full Professor of Engineering Geology at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Tehran, and an associate member of the Academy of Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Prof. Memarian is the author of over 25 books and has published more than 300 research papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings, including 6 books and over 40 papers on engineering education. Seven of his recent books have been recognized as the Islamic Republic of Iran Book of the Year and the academic book of the year. His research interests include rock fracture mechanics, geotechnical exploration, petroleum geomechanics, natural hazards, and engineering education. He is also a founding member and board member of the Iranian Association for Engineering Education (ISEE) and the Iranian Institute for Accreditation of Engineering Education (IIAEE)
