Innovations in teaching and learning
- Objective: Developing necessary skills in engineering students for reducing the role of faculty mentor
- Outline: Designing and presenting student-centred courses
- Presented by: Prof. Hossein Memarian
Abstract: The teacher's reliance on traditional lecturing, or devoting an entire lesson to the uniform presentation of materials with PowerPoint, is often boring and usually does not lead to the expected learning outcomes. Students will not learn by just sitting in the class, listening to the teacher, memorizing the material, doing the homework, and answering the questions. The goal of university education is to improve students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes. In our higher education programs, the knowledge part is very prominent, while less attention is paid to the development of necessary skills in students. There are a group of skills, which are usually not taught in our higher education courses, but students need to know and use them during their university studies and their professional careers. They are the ability to work together, communicate, think critically and creatively, research, innovate, comply with professional ethics, time management, and the ability to learn. The above skills are usually not achieved in teacher-centered education. In this workshop, the structure and presentation method of a course, in which all activities, including teaching and assessment of the course, are carried out by the students, is explained. The purpose of this course is to develop the aforementioned abilities in students entering the bachelor of engineering programs.
