What should students know and be able to do by the end of their education? How can we determine whether students have reached the desired competencies? This session addresses learning outcomes, performance indicators, performance assessment with rubrics, and the role each of these plays in assessing engineering education programs. Learning outcomes refer to what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time they graduate. Performance indicators are specific and measurable statements that outline the actions or skills students need to demonstrate to achieve a learning outcome. The performance of students in displaying a particular outcome varies. Levels of proficiency or competence in performance are defined with measurable expressions. A rubric is a tool that clarifies factors such as the aspects of performance being assessed (performance indicators), a scale that specifies the level of mastery for each criterion (performance level), and the characteristics related to each criterion (descriptors).
