What role does the learning environment play in promoting or suppressing learning?
The learning environment is the physical or virtual space in which learning occurs. The learning environment includes all the physical, psychological, emotional, cultural and social conditions and facilities that affect the growth and development of the learner in an educational environment. The “physical environment” includes light, sound, classroom temperature, seating arrangements, and educational facilities; the “virtual environment” includes the use of technologies such as online classes, videos, and educational software; the “social environment” includes interaction between the learner and the instructor, teamwork, and a collaborative environment; and finally the “psychological” or emotional environment, such as a sense of security, self-confidence, motivation, and stress reduction in the learner. Studies have shown a significant relationship between the learning environment and the achievement of valuable outcomes such as learner satisfaction and success.
