Why is quality assessment critical? How is the quality of engineering education measured? What are the criteria for evaluating engineering education programs? What are the mechanisms for assessing engineering education programs? These are some of the questions addressed in this session. Quality in the academic system can be defined as the alignment of the current situation with standards or the current situation with objectives or expectations. Quality can be determined in various ways: through establishing governmental regulations and guidelines, internal control by each educational institution, independent accreditation systems at the national level, using the services of international accreditation and validation organizations, and finally, through market mechanisms. Accreditation is a process to ensure the achievement of quality standards. Through internal and external assessments, it examines educational programs, identifies deficiencies, and proposes corrective actions to improve the quality of the academic program.
