Engineering Design
Design is the pinnacle of engineering activities. Engineers, using their imagination and professional skills, have played a significant role in shaping the world we live in. As modern engineering education increasingly emphasizes design, the need to enhance the role of creative thinking and engineering design is strongly felt. This goal can be achieved in various ways, such as dedicating an independent course on engineering design during the final year of undergraduate studies or directing engineering capstone projects more towards team-based activities and design-oriented contents. Engineering design is an open-ended and ill-structured process, and unlike other engineering problems, it does not have a single solution. The potential solutions cannot be determined using a specific algorithm or mathematical method. To address ill-structured activities and aid in decision-making and optimal selection among possible options, engineers organize the design process and employ strategies and tools to perform it effectively. The primary goal of this course is to answer the following questions: What is engineering design, and how is it conducted? This training course emphasizes conceptual design or the part of the design process that leads to identifying design options. This course can also be delivered virtually or in a hybrid format. A self-study, targeted, and structured textbook has been prepared to facilitate the teaching of engineering design. Some course sessions listed below are available as video courseware for those interested in teaching this subject in undergraduate engineering programs.
